What is Photography? Know Everything From Photography History, Types To Photographers

We explained here what photography is? how it was invented, and what types of photography exist. Also, list of photographs with all others of general characteristics and elements.

What is photography? To answer that question, we will first look at what photography is. The answer to that question is not just the subject of this article but also a lot of other articles on Wikipedia.

We start with the history of the origins of photography and how it has evolved over time. Then we will take a closer look at the types of photography that exist today along with their subtypes and examples of each.

This is the place to go to know everything about photography. Whether you are a professional photographer or just someone who likes taking photos on their smartphone, this site will cover tips and advice that you can use to improve your photography knowledge or other things.

What is photography?

Photography is the art of creating still or moving pictures by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as film, or electronically by means of an image sensor. It involves capturing images of people, places, and events using a camera, and can be done as a hobby or as a profession.

There are many different styles and techniques used in photography, including portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, and fine art. Photographers may use a variety of equipment and techniques to capture images, such as different types of cameras, lenses, lighting, and editing software.

Photography plays a significant role in many areas of our lives, including journalism, art, advertising, and personal memories. It allows us to document and remember important events and moments, and to share them with others.

As its name suggests (from the Greek photos, “light” and graphos, “drawing, writing”), photography is the technique and art of obtaining fixed and lasting images through the projection of light. This is achieved thanks to materials that react chemically to it or, more recently, in electronic devices sensitive to it.

Photo is short for photography. It is basically a visual art, or scientific recording of light or an image, which is not in the form of a drawing, painting or sculpture. Photography has been here for long, longer than you might have. Though it’s relatively new compared to other forms of art and science.

Photography is a modern invention, inaugurating a range of enormous possibilities for image capture and reproduction. His technique was later used by the cinema and other later technologies.

Its elemental functioning replicates that of the camera obscura, which is pinhole photography. In addition, various technological advances have made it possible to adjust and preserve the projected image.

Photography inaugurated a range of enormous capture possibilities.

How was photography invented?

The concept of photography dates back to ancient times, when people observed that light could be used to create images on surfaces. However, the first practical process for producing photographs was developed in the early 19th century.

The history of photography can be divided into several major periods:

The Camera Obscura: The camera obscura (Latin for “dark chamber”) is a simple optical device that projects an image of the outside world onto a surface inside a darkened chamber. The principle behind the camera obscura has been known since ancient times, and was used as a drawing aid by artists.

The Daguerreotype: In 1839, French artist Louis Daguerre developed the daguerreotype, a process that used silver-coated copper plates to produce photographs. The daguerreotype was the first successful method of producing photographs, but it was expensive and time-consuming, and the images it produced were not easily reproducible.

The Calotype: In the 1840s, Englishman William Henry Fox Talbot developed the calotype, a process that used paper coated with silver iodide to produce negatives. This made it possible to produce multiple prints from a single negative, which was a major advancement in photography.

The Wet Plate Collodion Process: In the 1850s, Englishman Frederick Scott Archer developed the wet plate collodion process, which used glass plates coated with a mixture of collodion (a flammable liquid) and silver nitrate to produce negatives. This process was much faster than the daguerreotype and calotype, and allowed for the mass production of photographs.

The Dry Plate Process: In the 1870s, the dry plate process was developed, which used glass plates coated with a light-sensitive emulsion that could be prepared in advance and stored until needed. This allowed photographers to take photographs more quickly and easily, and marked the beginning of modern photography.

Photography did not have a single inventor, as it was the consequence of a successive series of technologies dating from the 19th to the 20th century.

The first ever photograph was taken in 1826 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. Before that time, artists used to draw something from their eyes (eyes and brain) or their imagination (imagination).

After that event, there was a revolution by Louis Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot, and others who made great improvements to the process of photography so as everyone can enjoy photos today on their smartphones, with digital cameras, and also on social media websites like Facebook and Instagram.

Before photography was invented as we understand it today, the development of various technological objects was necessary.

The first of them was the camera obscura, which was used even in Antiquity, in the 5th and 6th centuries BC. C.

However, it was not until the 19th century that this technology led to the invention of artifacts more similar to photography. Among them, the daguerreotype, heliogravure, and cyanotype were mainly spread.

The existence of these previous techniques was essential for the development of photography. For this reason, those responsible for its invention and improvement are too numerous for there to be an “inventor” of photography.

History of photography

History of photography. The calotype was the first way to obtain multiple copies of a negative.

The calotype was the first way to obtain multiple copies of a negative.

The first successful experimental photographic attempt was heliogravure, discovered by Joseph Niépce around 1820. This French chemist used a camera obscura where he exposed a surface of paper, glass, and metals such as tin, copper, and pewter for eight hours.

The result was a more or less clear impression of what was observed. But since the fixation issue had not been resolved, the images thus obtained were slowly being lost. In 1825 he obtained the first permanent image using a mixture of bitumen as a photosensitive mixture.

These experiences were inherited by Louis Daguerre, Niépce’s partner, who in 1837 developed and spread the daguerreotype around the world. It was a similar procedure to his partner’s, but it employed a polished silver surface like a mirror and was revealed with mercury vapors.

The images thus obtained were unique and unrepeatable, and required a lot of light, so they were only taken outdoors. The exposure times were still long (about 10 minutes) so it was necessary to use chemical accelerators.

The first photographic prints were made in 1840 when William Fox Talbot developed the calotype. This system made it possible to obtain paper negatives from photographic image.

These could be positives on another sheet of paper, moistened in an acid solution of nitrate of silver. Then cyanotype was introduced, which produced copies of the original.

In 1851 Gustave Le Gray introduced a new photographic mechanism: wet collodion. It consisted of spilling that substance between two glass sheets and then developing it in ammoniacal iron sulfate. Since then, the massification of photographic images began with this method, which prevailed until 1885.

Modern photography

Modern photography - Digital Photography

Digital photography appeared in the second half of the 20th century, in 1990.

In 1888 George Eastman introduced the first Kodak camera. As used photographic film reels, he revolutionized the world forever making photography accessible to any person, not only professional photographers.

With the invention of photographic film, glass plates then stopped being used. However, they were needed again for a period in 1907, as they were the only method of taking color photographs, using various monochrome glass plates.

The photograph was never the same again. The cameras became easy to use, without the need for professional training. In 1931 the flash was invented, which made it possible to photograph at night or in low light situations. In 1948 instantaneous or Polaroid photography spread, which was developed in just 60 seconds.

Digital photography appeared after the technological revolution of the second half of the 20th century, in 1990. This process replaced photosensitive film with electronic sensors that performed the same function and eliminated the need for development.

Types of photography

Types of photography

We can talk about different types of photography depending on their context:

Advertising photography: The one that feeds advertising or marketing, that is, the promotion of consumer goods and services. Usually, it is digitally intervened and “corrections” are made to make it more seductive.

Fashion photography: It is taken at fashion shows and events, to show clothing, hairstyles, makeup, etc. It goes hand in hand with advertising, but digital interventions are not usually done.

Documentary photography: Also called historical or journalistic, since it is done for informational, reporting, historical value, or reporting purposes.

Landscape photography: It is taken to reproduce the natural beauty of a landscape, be it an aerial, terrestrial, or underwater shot. They are usually open and colorful.

Scientific photography: It is taken through telescopes, microscopes, and other scientific tools, in order to show what is commonly not possible with the naked eye.

Artistic photography: The one taken for aesthetic or experimental purposes, such as montages, compositions, etc.

Portrait photography: Equivalent to the painting of portraits of past eras, it is intended to show someone dear, famous, or beautiful, at a certain point in their life.

The Photographic Camera

The Photographic Camera

As we have said, photography is based on the camera obscura: a totally dark compartment with a small hole at one end, through which the light from outside enters and projects the images of the outside world, albeit inverted, onto the background.

Exactly that happens inside cameras, except that they are equipped with:

  • A diaphragm that opens to let in light and closes to prevent it, at a manageable speed;
  • Optical lenses that allow the project to be focused;
  • Mirrors that reinvert the projected image;
  • Photosensitive tape or a digital sensor captures the image and reproduces it.

Image Elements – Photography Focus

The focus is the right arrangement of the lenses that allow the sharpness of the image.

When capturing the image, photographers consider the following elements:

Focus: The right arrangement of the camera lenses allows the picture to be captured with precise clarity, focusing on the important elements of the same and not on the background.

Opening: The degree of the aperture of the diaphragm, that is, equivalent to the amount of light that is let in suddenly when you press the shutter. The more light allowed, the more intense and hazy whites; a smaller quantity, dark photographs.

Shutter speed: The amount of time the film or sensor is exposed to light outside the camera. If the ambient light is low, it will require longer exposure times and vice versa.

White balance: Only in contemporary digital equipment, the computer inside the device allows you to calibrate the color temperature, choosing between a whiter (cold) or yellow (warm) light.

Photographic Sensitivity: Formerly it had to do with the type of photosensitive material: some were allowed to capture more light than others, as they had different degrees of sensitivity. In digital equipment, the sensor is programmed to simulate these effects, allowing greater or lesser sensitivity as desired.

Photography is an art

What is photography? What is art? If you have ever asked yourself this question, the truth might surprise you. People often get these things confused with each other, but they’re actually very different. “Art” generally refers to paintings, sculptures, poetry and novels that are usually meant to be aesthetically pleasing. “Photography” as a term has evolved tremendously over the years since it originated back in the 1840’s when it became a popular alternative to painting.

Photography is today considered one of the Fine Arts (the eighth). However, in its beginnings, it was considered rather a cold and impersonal technique, or even a parlor trick, unrefined. Therefore, it could show greater or lesser ability, but it was not valued as art.

However, throughout the twentieth century, novel aesthetic trends emerged, reflecting the sensibilities of the time. Thus the subjective and expressive potential of photography was opened up.

Photo report for journalism

Photo report for journalism

The journalism was particularly sensitive to the incorporation of the images involved in the photograph. The possibility of showing what happened and not only telling through language, revolutionized the news media in a way only comparable with the appearance of films and audiovisual filming machines. Journalistic photographers dedicate all their time to the photo report.

In addition, from this technological novelty, a new profession and a new figure in journalism emerged: the photo reporter. Although many photographers are dedicated to various forms of photography (artistic, event, fashion, etc.), journalistic photographers generally dedicate all their time to this area.

Why is photography important?

Photography forever revolutionized humanity. The possibility of capturing images quickly and efficiently, being able to later retrieve and display them, meant a change in what until its appearance was considered information, the look, and even the truth.

The presence of cameras, which we even now carry on our cell phones, allowed us to immortalize all kinds of events. In addition to being able to share these images with friends or strangers, it also allows reporting events of which, otherwise, there would have been no evidence.
